Ayurveda for Spring
In my own life as a yoga teacher, Thai yoga therapist, and practitioner of Ayurveda, I have found that Ayurvedic practices help greatly during the changes between the seasons. I’m so excited to be able to share this knowledge with you in this blog and in my upcoming workshop, “Seasonal Ayurveda.” This workshop includes an optional springtime cleanse to help kick-start your digestion and begin the warmer months feeling lighter and more vital.
Dr. John Douillard describes, “Spring is also associated with the qualities of Kapha, which are heavy, cold and oily. To stay balanced, focus on foods and activities that are light, dry and warm.” Therefore, Spring is the optimum time to cleanse the body, to reduce the build-up of Kapha, preventing feelings of sluggishness, spring colds, and allergies.
Ayurveda suggests performing cleansing and nourishing at-home body treatments to eliminate toxins in the body and support lymphatic flow — because just as mother nature transitions from one season to the next, we go through subtle shifts as well, releasing what was needed to move through the winter season, and preparing the body for warmer seasons.
Spring is the perfect time to cleanse and re-set your digestive system through herbal supplements and seasonal eating. Healthy digestion is the cornerstone of good health. If your body’s engine is not working properly, your body cannot absorb the nutrients it needs and rid itself of what it does not need. When your digestion is working at its prime level, your body is nourished and healthy.
Nature also offers us a harvest of cleansing food that help restore vitality and strengthen immunity. Dr. John Douillard states, “When we adjust our diet and lifestyle to match the season, health-promoting digestive microbes dramatically change. Blossom into the Season!
By releasing what no longer serves you, you slowly begin to make more room for what feeds and nourishes you! During this season of renewal, begin daily meditation practices to clear any clutter that has built up in the space our your mind, pranayama to clear any energetic blocks and stagnation, and add more twists and movements of the spine into your asana practice. Through the knowledge and practice of Ayurveda we can glide into this natural cleansing season feeling more vibrant, lighter, and healthy!
